Overview

The textile industry contains substantial specialist capability distributed across manufacturers, suppliers, processors, designers, technical specialists, research organisations and other participants. Finding a company is relatively easy. Understanding what that company can actually do is much harder. Conventional company directories, industry classifications and marketing websites provide fragments of this information, but they do not necessarily describe capability in a consistent or useful way. textile.solutions explores a different approach.

A supply chain is not simply a list of companies. To understand what an industrial ecosystem can do, it is necessary to understand the capabilities and resources contained within it and the relationships between them. The challenge is not 'who works in textiles?' but what they can actually do, what resources they possess, what processes they can perform, what evidence supports those claims, and how those capabilities might connect with others.

textile.solutions is being developed as structured industry infrastructure rather than a conventional business directory. The project explores how information from multiple sources — companies, manufacturing capabilities, processes, materials, machinery, specialist knowledge, products, projects, geographic relationships, supply-chain relationships and evidence — can be organised into a coherent model of industrial capability. The objective is not simply to accumulate records. It is to create useful relationships between them, moving the model from company, to resources, to capabilities, to evidence, to relationships, to potential supply chains.

The project combines research into available industry and public data; data structure work developing ways of representing companies, resources, processes, capabilities and evidence without reducing specialist knowledge to simplistic categories; curation combining structured data with informed human validation; system design for the technical architecture required to store, connect, query and present this information; interface design making complex relationships understandable; and a deliberate respect for practitioner knowledge as a source of understanding in its own right.

The same underlying information can support several different questions — who can manufacture this, where does this capability exist, what alternative suppliers might exist, which capabilities are geographically concentrated, where are the gaps in a supply chain, what combinations of organisations could address a new requirement. This makes textile.solutions relevant not only to sourcing and business development, but potentially to industrial resilience, innovation and supply-chain understanding.

GRAY is responsible for the evolving concept, research methodology, information architecture, data model, technical development and interface. This is presented deliberately as work in progress, not a finished product — the platform has not solved the questions it investigates. The development process itself is the case study: identify a problem, form a model, test it against real industry information, discover where the model fails, refine it, repeat. Unlike the studio's historical case studies, textile.solutions is visibly alive and unfinished — research material, evolving schemas, datasets, interface experiments, maps and prototypes sit alongside more resolved elements, and difficult questions about how capability should be defined, evidenced or compared remain openly visible rather than disguised.
